  The Cardinals activated Gallegos (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Friday. St. Louis has a rare Friday off day, but it will have Gallegos back in its bullpen Saturday versus the Giants. The veteran reliever has been out since early May with a right shoulder impingement and didn't pitch well on a rehab assignment, allowing eight runs with a 5:4 K:BB over 6.1 innings. Gallegos will probably be eased into high-leverage situations.

The expectation had been that Gallegos would return sometime during the Cardinals' current series versus the Marlins, and while he is with the team in Miami, the club has opted to hold off on activating the reliever for now. Gallegos has been out since early May with a right shoulder impingement. He posted a 12.00 ERA in 13 appearances with St. Louis before getting hurt.

If Gallegos doesn't rejoin the 26-man active roster Monday, he could rejoin the St. Louis bullpen at some point during the club's three-game series with the Marlins, which runs through Wednesday. Gallegos has been out since early May with a right shoulder impingement and has struggled during his minor-league rehab assignment, allowing eight runs with a 5:4 K:BB over 6.1 innings. Prior to landing on the shelf, Gallegos posted a 12.00 ERA in 13 appearances with St. Louis. Gallegos will likely be deployed in low-leverage situations initially upon his return.

  Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that Gallegos (shoulder) is scheduled to make a one-inning rehab appearance with Double-A Springfield on Friday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Gallegos has already made five appearances between Springfield and Triple-A Memphis since landing on the 15-day injured list May 6 with a right shoulder impingement, but he presumably needs to turn in better results before he's reinstated. While covering 5.1 innings during his rehab assignment, Gallegos has given up five earned runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and four walks while striking out four. He's shown improvement lately with two straight clean appearances, and another strong showing Friday could be enough for him to get activated.

In his first rehab game May 31, he pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. Prior to the injury, the veteran reliever had allowed 12 runs with a 13:7 K:BB over nine innings.

  Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Tuesday that a decision on where Gallegos (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment will be made Wednesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. The right-hander threw a live bullpen session over the weekend and had another bullpen session Tuesday, clearing him to begin a minor-league rehab assignment. Gallegos landed on the shelf with a pinched nerve in his shoulder in early May, and he should be able to rejoin the Cardinals after a short stay in the minor leagues.

Gallegos' move to the IL comes one day after he failed to record an out while surrendering three earned runs on three hits en route to taking his first loss of the season in the Cardinals' series finale with the White Sox. Considering Gallegos allowed four runs while recording zero outs in his appearance before that March 30 in Detroit, his injury might have been bothering him for a while. He'll be eligible to come off the IL on May 21.

  Gallegos (2-0) earned the win Friday over the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs on a hit and a walk while striking out two over 1.1 innings. Gallegos was called on in the fifth inning after Steven Matz got into a jam, and Gallegos ultimately allowed a game-tying home run to Eugenio Suarez. That was the extent of the damage, as Gallegos settled down for a scoreless sixth inning and picked up the win when the Cardinals took the lead for good in the seventh. The right-hander has allowed at least one run in three of his seven appearances so far, pitching to a 5.40 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 9:3 K:BB over 6.2 innings. He's added a save and two holds, but manager Oliver Marmol is no longer using a closer-by-committee approach, so Gallegos is unlikely to see as many save chances as in previous years.

While he's allowed five baserunners (three hits, two walks) over four innings, Gallegos has also struck out six batters while collecting a save, a hold and a win through four appearances. Manager Oliver Marmol still looks to be using a flexible approach to late-inning assignments, though Ryan Helsley is the Cardinals' top closing option. Gallegos will be in the mix for save opportunities, along with Andrew Kittredge and JoJo Romero, when Helsley is unavailable.

St. Louis recalled right-hander Jake Woodford from Triple-A Memphis to serve as a replacement on the 28-man active roster for Gallegos, whose season comes to an end as a result of the injury. Unless follow-up tests on Gallegos' shoulder that reveal structural damage, he should be in store for a relatively normal offseason and head into spring training at full health. Gallegos concludes the 2023 campaign with two wins, 10 saves, 20 holds and a 4.42 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 59:12 K:BB across 55 innings out of the St. Louis bullpen.

  Gallegos and Ryan Helsley have split saves almost evenly this year, but it wasn't a secret that Helsley was the top dog in the Cardinals bullpen. It's just that manager Oliver Marmol didn't abide by traditional bullpen roles and didn't always have the patience to reserve Helsley for the ninth. Now, he doesn't have the choice. Helsley is out of commission with a forearm injury that doesn't sound like it'll require a lengthy IL stint. But these things aren't always predictable, and it's telling that the Cardinals are sending him for another round of testing. Gallegos isn't having his best season, but there's no one else in the Cardinals bullpen equipped to handle such a role. If Helsley's presence was holding you back before, it shouldn't now.
