Player Outlook
Typically among the slowest pitchers in pace, Giovanny Gallegos had trouble adjusting to MLB's new pitch clock in 2023. He didn't have too many pitch timer violations (3), but his performance may have been affected by the new rule. Gallegos posted his worst ratios since joining the Cardinals in 2018, while his 25.8% strikeout rate was the 2nd-worst mark of his career. The 32-year-old continued to limit free passes - his 5.2% walk rate was 8th-best among qualified relievers - but he gave up far too many home runs (11) across his 55 innings (1.8 HR/9). On the plus side, Gallegos racked up double-digit saves for the third straight year, along with 20 holds. The veteran's season ended in mid-September due to a shoulder injury, but unless follow-up tests reveal any structural damage, Gallegos should be in line for a normal offseason.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Returns from injured list

The Cardinals activated Gallegos (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Friday. St. Louis has a rare Friday off day, but it will have Gallegos back in its bullpen Saturday versus the Giants. The veteran reliever has been out since early May with a right shoulder impingement and didn't pitch well on a rehab assignment, allowing eight runs with a 5:4 K:BB over 6.1 innings. Gallegos will probably be eased into high-leverage situations.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Could return as soon as Thursday

Gallegos (shoulder) could be activated from the 15-day injured list as soon as Thursday, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The expectation had been that Gallegos would return sometime during the Cardinals' current series versus the Marlins, and while he is with the team in Miami, the club has opted to hold off on activating the reliever for now. Gallegos has been out since early May with a right shoulder impingement. He posted a 12.00 ERA in 13 appearances with St. Louis before getting hurt.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Activation imminent

Gallegos (shoulder) could be activated from the 15-day injured list as soon as Monday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. If Gallegos doesn't rejoin the 26-man active roster Monday, he could rejoin the St. Louis bullpen at some point during the club's three-game series with the Marlins, which runs through Wednesday. Gallegos has been out since early May with a right shoulder impingement and has struggled during his minor-league rehab assignment, allowing eight runs with a 5:4 K:BB over 6.1 innings. Prior to landing on the shelf, Gallegos posted a 12.00 ERA in 13 appearances with St. Louis. Gallegos will likely be deployed in low-leverage situations initially upon his return.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Set for another rehab appearance

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that Gallegos (shoulder) is scheduled to make a one-inning rehab appearance with Double-A Springfield on Friday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Gallegos has already made five appearances between Springfield and Triple-A Memphis since landing on the 15-day injured list May 6 with a right shoulder impingement, but he presumably needs to turn in better results before he's reinstated. While covering 5.1 innings during his rehab assignment, Gallegos has given up five earned runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and four walks while striking out four. He's shown improvement lately with two straight clean appearances, and another strong showing Friday could be enough for him to get activated.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Another outing on tap

Gallegos (shoulder) will throw at least one inning of relief Tuesday at Double-A Springfield, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Gallegos is set for his fifth minor-league rehab appearance Tuesday and could toss multiple innings for the first time during his rehab stint. In four innings of minor-league work, Gallegos has allowed five runs on five hits and two walks. He should be approaching a return to the big-league roster.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Set for more rehab outings

Gallegos (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab appearance with Triple-A Memphis on Thursday and will have another outing Sunday, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. After completing the two rehab appearances, Gallegos's next step will be to throw back-to-back days. The righty landed on the 15-day injured list in early May due to a right shoulder impingement. In his first rehab game May 31, he pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. Prior to the injury, the veteran reliever had allowed 12 runs with a 13:7 K:BB over nine innings.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Starting rehab assignment

Gallegos (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Friday. Gallegos has been on the shelf since early May with a right shoulder impingement but has shown enough progress in recent live batting practice sessions that he's been cleared for game action. The veteran reliever had allowed 12 runs over nine innings before getting hurt, so the Cardinals could slow-play his rehab assignment to make sure he's sharp before being activated.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Rehab assignment on tap

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Tuesday that a decision on where Gallegos (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment will be made Wednesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. The right-hander threw a live bullpen session over the weekend and had another bullpen session Tuesday, clearing him to begin a minor-league rehab assignment. Gallegos landed on the shelf with a pinched nerve in his shoulder in early May, and he should be able to rejoin the Cardinals after a short stay in the minor leagues.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Set for another bullpen

Gallegos (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Gallegos continues to progress in his recovery from a right shoulder impingement that landed him on the injured list May 6. A successful session Saturday could put the 32-year-old right-hander on track for a rehab assignment and a return to the Cardinals' bullpen shortly thereafter.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Continuing mound work

Gallegos (shoulder) will throw another bullpen session Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. It will be his third since going on the injured list two weeks ago with a right shoulder impingement. Gallegos could continue with his mound work after that or perhaps will be cleared to begin a rehab assignment. It sounds like he might be ready to rejoin the Cardinals' bullpen in late May or early June.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Shelved with shoulder impingement

The Cardinals placed Gallegos on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right shoulder impingement. Gallegos' move to the IL comes one day after he failed to record an out while surrendering three earned runs on three hits en route to taking his first loss of the season in the Cardinals' series finale with the White Sox. Considering Gallegos allowed four runs while recording zero outs in his appearance before that March 30 in Detroit, his injury might have been bothering him for a while. He'll be eligible to come off the IL on May 21.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Snags win Friday

Gallegos (2-0) earned the win Friday over the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs on a hit and a walk while striking out two over 1.1 innings. Gallegos was called on in the fifth inning after Steven Matz got into a jam, and Gallegos ultimately allowed a game-tying home run to Eugenio Suarez. That was the extent of the damage, as Gallegos settled down for a scoreless sixth inning and picked up the win when the Cardinals took the lead for good in the seventh. The right-hander has allowed at least one run in three of his seven appearances so far, pitching to a 5.40 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 9:3 K:BB over 6.2 innings. He's added a save and two holds, but manager Oliver Marmol is no longer using a closer-by-committee approach, so Gallegos is unlikely to see as many save chances as in previous years.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Picks up first win

Gallegos (1-0) retired the only batter he faced to earn the win Thursday over the Marlins. Gallegos got the last out in the top of the seventh inning, and the Cardinals rallied from a two-run deficit to take an 8-5 lead by the end of the frame. While he's allowed five baserunners (three hits, two walks) over four innings, Gallegos has also struck out six batters while collecting a save, a hold and a win through four appearances. Manager Oliver Marmol still looks to be using a flexible approach to late-inning assignments, though Ryan Helsley is the Cardinals' top closing option. Gallegos will be in the mix for save opportunities, along with Andrew Kittredge and JoJo Romero, when Helsley is unavailable.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Shut down with shoulder injury

The Cardinals placed Gallegos on the 15-day injured list Monday with right shoulder rotator cuff tendinitis. St. Louis recalled right-hander Jake Woodford from Triple-A Memphis to serve as a replacement on the 28-man active roster for Gallegos, whose season comes to an end as a result of the injury. Unless follow-up tests on Gallegos' shoulder that reveal structural damage, he should be in store for a relatively normal offseason and head into spring training at full health. Gallegos concludes the 2023 campaign with two wins, 10 saves, 20 holds and a 4.42 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 59:12 K:BB across 55 innings out of the St. Louis bullpen.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Earns 10th save

Gallegos picked up a save Sunday against the Pirates. He struck out one over a perfect inning. Gallegos had allowed six earned runs in 2.2 innings since his last save Aug. 9, but needed only eight pitches to close out Sunday's game. Gallegos has been splitting late-inning duties with JoJo Romero, but with Ryan Helsley recently being activated from the injured list, the pecking order of the Cardinals bullpen remains murky.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Locks down ninth save

Gallegos picked up the save Wednesday against the Rays, striking out one over a scoreless inning. It's Gallegos' first save since Jordan Hicks was dealt at the trade deadline. It appeared that the 31-year-old right-hander would be first in line for save opportunities until Ryan Helsley's (forearm) return, though he's been splitting the job with JoJo Romero so far. Gallegos has now gone nine straight appearances (10.1 innings) without allowing a run, striking out 11 in that span. His ERA is down 3.45 with a 1.02 WHIP and 47:9 K:BB across 47 innings this season, while he's racked up nine saves and 15 holds.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Allows game-tying homer

Gallegos blew the save in Wednesday's 8-5 loss to the Giants, allowing a two-run home run while striking out two and walking one across one inning. Gallegos appeared to be working his way out of trouble after issuing a leadoff walk to LaMonte Wade Jr. to begin the ninth, retiring the next two batters he faced. He then got ahead 0-2 in the count before running it full and eventually surrendering a game-tying, two-run home run to Mike Yastrzemski. The reliever would get out of the inning with the score still tied 5-5, though the Cardinals fell in the 10th for their fifth straight loss. Gallegos has now blown two of his last three save attempts while also allowing three home runs so far in June. He had allowed just two home runs all season coming into this month.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Possible waiver wire pickups

Gallegos and Ryan Helsley have split saves almost evenly this year, but it wasn't a secret that Helsley was the top dog in the Cardinals bullpen. It's just that manager Oliver Marmol didn't abide by traditional bullpen roles and didn't always have the patience to reserve Helsley for the ninth. Now, he doesn't have the choice. Helsley is out of commission with a forearm injury that doesn't sound like it'll require a lengthy IL stint. But these things aren't always predictable, and it's telling that the Cardinals are sending him for another round of testing. Gallegos isn't having his best season, but there's no one else in the Cardinals bullpen equipped to handle such a role. If Helsley's presence was holding you back before, it shouldn't now.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Notches four-out save

Gallegos struck out one batter in 1.1 perfect innings while picking up a save over Cincinnati on Friday. Gallegos needed just 15 pitches (11 strikes) to retire all four batters he faced in the 7-4 win. It was his first save chance since his massive collapse June 2 against the Pirates. He's now converted eight of 10 opportunities on the year while registering a 3.51 ERA and a 24:5 K:BB.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Grabs another save

Gallegos tossed a perfect inning to earn a save against the Guardians on Saturday. Gallegos made quick work of Cleveland in the ninth to uphold a one-run lead, retiring the side on just five pitches. The right-hander picked up his sixth save as a result, five of which have come since May 9. Ryan Helsley has just two saves in that span, and though either reliever could get the call to close in any given contest, Gallegos appears to be slightly more likely to see such chances for the time being.
