Player Outlook
Yu Darvish was limited to just 16 starts in 2024, in part due to elbow inflammation but also because of an off-the-field family concern that kept him away for an extended period of time. He returned to post a 3.55 ERA in five September starts and was excellent in two NLDS outings against the Dodgers. Darvish is expected to enter 2025 with a clean bill of health, but after averaging 20 starts and 109 innings over the last two seasons, fantasy managers can't rely on him to provide volume in his age-38 season. He's also not the swing-and-miss pitcher he once was, seeing his strikeout rate drop again in 2024 to a career-low 23.6 percent. The good news is, Darvish isn't going to cost much to acquire at this point and there could still be a bit of upside in his right arm.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Managing elbow inflammation

Manager Mike Shildt said Tuesday that Darvish experienced elbow inflammation after his last spring start, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The right-hander was previously said to be dealing with "fatigue," which prevented him from starting Tuesday's spring game as scheduled. Darvish hasn't been shut down from throwing and played catch Tuesday, which indicates it isn't believed to be a serious issue. Still, the 38-year-old's availability for the start of the regular season is now in question.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Battling fatigue

Darvish had Sunday's bullpen session and Tuesday's scheduled spring start pushed back due to fatigue, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The severity of the issue is being downplayed, but it's a concerning development late in camp for the 38-year-old. Darvish will be evaluated daily to determine when he'll have his next bullpen session, and his outlook for the start of the season could change significantly if he's unable to throw for more than a few days.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Fans four in second spring start

Darvish allowed one run on two hits and issued two walks while striking out four batters over four innings in a Cactus League contest against Kansas City on Thursday. Darvish looked better Thursday than he did in his spring debut March 8, when he allowed two runs over 2.2 frames. The veteran right-hander threw 54 pitches Thursday, 26 percent of which were curveballs -- by comparison, he went to the curve just 8.6 percent of the time during the 2024 regular season. Darvish did use his curveball more often late in the campaign last year, and his usage of the pitch in the early going this spring suggests he may continue that trend into 2025.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Uneven outing in spring debut

Darvish pitched 2.2 innings in a Cactus League contest against Cleveland on Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three batters. Darvish allowed a double and issued a walk in the first frame but emerged unscathed on the scoreboard. He breezed through a 1-2-3 second inning but struggled in the third, yielding three singles and hitting a batter with a pitch to allow two runs to score before being lifted with two outs. Despite Darvish's unimpressive results, the Padres were likely pleased with his outing, as he tossed 57 pitches, induced seven whiffs and averaged 94.3 mph on his fastball -- up from the 93.9 mph he averaged last year -- in his first game action of the exhibition slate. The veteran right-hander is slated to work as San Diego's No. 3 starter this season.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Not yet pitching in Cactus League

Darvish won't appear in a Cactus League contest until early March, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Darvish isn't dealing with any injury, but rather than ask him to take part in Cactus League competition, the Padres have thus far had him toss a simulated game and then throw in an intrasquad game. The veteran hurler tossed two scoreless frames Monday in the intrasquad affair, and he expressed afterward that he was happy with the results. Darvish figures to slot in behind Dylan Cease and Michael King in San Diego's rotation this season.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Slated for NLDS Game 2 start

Darvish will start Sunday in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Dodgers, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Michael King would be on regular rest Sunday following a dominant 12-strikeout outing in the wild-card series versus Atlanta, but the Padres will hold him back, presumably for Game 3. Darvish will be opposed by Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Expected to operate as bullpen arm

Darvish is expected begin the postseason as a bullpen arm for the Padres, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Darvish will be left out of the starting rotation as the Padres begin their best-of-three Wild Card Round series with Atlanta on Tuesday. San Diego will go with Michael King, Joe Musgrove and Dylan Cease as its starters in the series. Darvish finished the 2024 regular season with a 3.31 ERA and 78 strikeouts over 81.2 innings in 16 starts with the Padres. Additionally, the right-hander owns a 4.19 ERA with 54 punchouts over 58 innings in 11 career postseason appearances.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Picks up seventh win

Darvish (7-3) allowed three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings to earn the win over the Diamondbacks on Friday. Darvish allowed 10 runs over 25.1 innings in September after returning from a lengthy absence due to elbow inflammation, but he won three of his five starts in that span. The right-hander concludes the regular season with a 3.31 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 78:22 K:BB over 81.2 innings across 16 starts.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Strikes out nine

Darvish did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 4-2 win over the White Sox, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out nine over 6.1 innings. Outside of a pair of solo home runs from Korey Lee and Miguel Vargas, Darvish made the White Sox hitters look silly and tied his season high with nine strikeouts. He threw 87 pitches, which is the most he's thrown in four starts since returning from the injured list. Darvish also became the first Japanese-born pitcher to reach 2,000 career strikeouts in MLB. Darvish has now allowed two runs or fewer while reaching at least five innings in each of his last three starts and lines up for a start against the Diamondbacks before the end of the regular season.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Quiets Astros for six innings

Darvish (6-3) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out three over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Astros on Monday. This was the best of Darvish's three starts since he returned from an extended absence due to elbow inflammation and a personal matter. This was his fifth scoreless outing of the season. The veteran right-hander trimmed his ERA to 3.21 with a 1.11 WHIP and 65:19 K:BB over 70 innings across 14 starts. Darvish's next start is projected to be at home in a favorable matchup versus the White Sox.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Earns win over Mariners

Darvish (5-3) got the win over the Mariners on Tuesday, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five over five innings. The damage against Darvish was done early with solo home runs by Cal Raleigh and Luke Raley in the first and second inning. Darvish finished with three scoreless innings and got his first win since May 19. He tossed exactly 63 pitches for a second straight start since coming off the injured list and recorded five whiffs while throwing over 75 percent of his pitches for strikes. Darvish now owns a 3.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 62:17 K:BB in 64 innings. He lines up for a home start versus the Astros next week.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Struggles in return to rotation

Darvish did not factor into the decision in an extra-inning win over the Tigers on Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over 2.2 innings while striking out four. Darvish had a hard time getting through Detroit's lineup right from the jump, giving up a solo homer to Matt Vierling with two outs in the first before needing 47 pitches to get through the first two frames. He would be relieved by Yuki Matsui with two outs in the third, marking his shortest outing of the campaign -- though that was somewhat expected in Darvish's first start since returning from the injured list due to elbow inflammation. The veteran right-hander will look for better results in his next start, which is currently projected for next week in Seattle.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Confirmed for Wednesday start

Darvish (elbow) will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday against the Tigers, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Darvish hasn't pitched for the Padres since May 29, but after throwing 66 pitches in a simulated game Friday and then completing a bullpen session Monday, he's in the line to return to action versus Detroit. Because he hasn't pitched in a formal game environment since making a minor-league rehab appearance June 19, Darvish could have a workload restrictions imposed on him in his return to the big-league rotation.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Tracking toward return Wednesday

Darvish (elbow) is expected to rejoin the Padres' rotation Wednesday against the Tigers, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Darvish threw 66 pitches in a simulated game against minor leaguers last Friday and followed that up with a bullpen session Monday. The Padres have not yet confirmed that Darvish is in line to return Wednesday, but things appear to be pointing in that direction. Darvish hasn't made a start for the Padres since late May and his one rehab start came back on June 19, so it would not be a surprise if there's some rust Wednesday.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Hurls 66 pitches vs. minor leaguers

Darvish (personal/elbow) threw 66 pitches over four innings Friday in a controlled game against Cincinnati minor leaguers, Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press reports. Darvish continues to ramp up as he looks to return from an absence of over three months, initially due to an elbow injury and then because of a personal matter. The veteran right-hander threw on his own for a period while he was away from the team, and he's since tossed a bullpen and a sim game in addition to Friday's outing against minor leaguers, so he's not as far off as a starting pitcher might typically be after such a long absence. Per Wilson, Darvish felt fine following Friday's controlled game, but Darvish's next steps are yet to be determined.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Throws simulated game

Padres manager Mike Shildt said Monday on 97.3 The Fan that Darvish (elbow) threw a simulated game Sunday which included three "up and downs." Shildt added that Darvish recovered well from the session and the next step will either be another simulated game or perhaps a rehab start. Darvish was recently shifted from the restricted list back to the 15-day injured list, but he's considered healthy and it's all about rebuilding his stamina at this point. There should be more clarity on a potential timetable later this week.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Throws bullpen, feeling healthy

Darvish (elbow) threw a 27-pitch bullpen Friday and said he's feeling healthy, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Darvish was activated from the restricted list Friday after dealing with a personal matter back home, and he was shifted to the 15-day injured list once he rejoined the Padres in San Diego. He continued to throw while he was away from the team and was able to build up to 27 pitches Friday. Darvish also said Friday that he's feeling good and his placement on the IL was just "a matter of ramping up." San Diego has a hole to fill in its rotation after optioning Matt Waldron to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday, but Darvish won't be able to step into that role until September.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Shifts back to IL

Darvish (personal/elbow) was reinstated from the restricted list and returned to the 15-day injured list Friday. While Darvish will rejoin the Padres in San Diego on Friday, he'll still have some hurdles to clear before rejoining the active roster. The right-hander hasn't pitched since May 29 after sustaining a left groin strain. He's had his recovery delayed twice, experiencing elbow inflammation right before his expected activation in late June and then going on the restricted list July 6 as he dealt with a personal matter. The 37-year-old has been throwing on his own and even threw a live batting practice session at a San Diego-area high school Aug. 12, but it's unclear how close he might be to coming off the IL.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Throwing on own, could return

Darvish (personal) has yet to rejoin the Padres since landing on the restricted list July 6, but he has been working out and throwing on his own and most recently tossed a live batting practice session at a San Diego-area high school Sunday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Darvish hasn't pitched for the Padres since May 29, as he first landed on the injured list with a left groin strain, then made a rehab start June 17 with High-A Fort Wayne before experiencing minor elbow inflammation. He had resumed his throwing program before he stepped away from the team in early July to tend to the personal matter, and neither injury is believed to be a concern at this point. While the veteran righty hasn't informed the Padres whether he plans to return to the team in 2024, the fact that he's been ramping up his throwing would seem to suggest that he intends to come back this season. The Padres are likely to remain mum on Darvish's situation until he formally rejoins the club, but his potential late-season return would provide a significant boost to a surging squad that now finds itself within striking distance of the Dodgers for the division lead. Over his first 11 starts this season before going on the IL and then the restricted list, Darvish went 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 53:15 K:BB in 56.1 innings.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Team still hopeful for 2024 return

Darvish (personal/elbow) remains without a clear timetable for his return, though the Padres remain optimistic that the right-hander will rejoin the club at some point later this season, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Darvish has been on the restricted list for the last three-plus weeks while dealing with an unspecified personal issue. His timetable to rejoin the Padres is open-ended, and given that he hasn't done any throwing in a month, it will take him awhile to be built back up. Darvish initially went on the injured list back in early June with a strained groin and more recently dealt with an elbow issue, but he was trending in a good direction health-wise before going on the restricted list.
