The Yankees did reach out to Martinez, but the two sides don't seem close to a deal, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. At least for now, New York appears content to fill the DH spot internally in the absence of Giancarlo Stanton, who is facing an uncertain timetable for his return to action following a second round of PRP injections in his elbows. That leaves Martinez still looking for a job with less than three weeks to go until Opening Day. Martinez's numbers cratered last season and he is now 37 years old, but he was an All-Star as recently as 2023 when he hit 33 homers with 103 RBI in 113 regular-season games for the Dodgers.... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Getting start at DH
Martinez will start at designated hitter and bat sixth Wednesday in Game 3 of the NLCS versus the Dodgers. Jesse Winker was in the DH slot in each of the first two games of the series, but Martinez will get a shot Wednesday against right-hander Walker Buehler. It's Martinez's first start since Game 4 of the NLDS and his fourth start in 10 games this postseason for the Mets.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Expected to be in Game 3 lineup
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Martinez will likely be in the lineup Wednesday in Game 3 of the NLCS, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Jesse Winker started at designated hitter in each of the first two games of the series, going 2-for-6 with a 2:2 K:BB. The Dodgers are slated to start another right-hander, Walker Buehler, in Game 3, but it sounds like Martinez will receive his first start of the series. The veteran is 4-for-14 with three RBI and a 4:2 K:BB so far this postseason.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Starting in Game 2
Martinez is starting at DH and batting sixth in Sunday's Game 2 of the NLDS versus Philadelphia. Martinez began Game 1 on the bench but came on as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and delivered an RBI single. Jesse Winker was the starter at DH in that contest, and he'll move to the bench to begin the second game of the series. Sunday will mark Martinez's second start at DH for the Mets in the postseason, while Winker has started in that role three times.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Starting at DH
Martinez will start at designated hitter and bat sixth Wednesday in Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Brewers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Martinez yielded to Jesse Winker at designated hitter in Game 1, although he came off the bench to deliver a two-run single. The 37-year-old put up just a .368 OPS in September for the Mets.... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Absent from Game 1 lineup
Martinez is not in the lineup Tuesday for Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Brewers, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Martinez saw his playing time cut down the stretch of the regular season as he struggled to a .368 OPS in September. Jesse Winker had similar struggles in the final month but will get a shot at designated hitter in Game 1 versus righty Freddy Peralta.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: On bench again Sunday
Martinez is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Martinez is in the midst of a career-worst stretch at the plate, having gone 0-for-his-last-31, which is also the longest slump by a Mets hitter this season. He'll be on the bench for a second straight game, and Saturday's absence came against an opposing lefty starter. The 37-year-old may have played his way out of the regular lineup.... See More ... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Getting Saturday off
Martinez isn't in the Mets' lineup for Saturday's game versus the Phillies. Martinez will get a chance to collect himself Saturday after going 0-for-29 over his last eight games. Starling Marte will replace him as New York's DH, allowing Tyrone Taylor to start in right field while batting sixth.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Absent from lineup
Martinez is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Nationals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. In the midst of a six-game hitless stretch, Martinez will grab a seat for the series finale. Starling Marte will occupy the designated-hitter spot for the Mets while Tyrone Taylor plays right field.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Taking seat Friday
Martinez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Phillies. After starting at DH in three consecutive games, Martinez will give way to Jesse Winker on Friday. Martinez is 3-for-21 (.143) with four RBI in September.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Not starting Sunday
Martinez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds. Martinez started the past two games after returning from the paternity list, and he'll receive a day off after going 2-for-8 with a double, three RBI and three strikeouts. Jesse Winker will shift to designated hitter while Harrison Bader picks up a start in the outfield.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Returns from paternity leave
The Mets activated Martinez from the paternity list Thursday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Martinez missed the series against the Red Sox while tending to more important matters but will be back for his club's weekend series versus the Reds. DJ Stewart was optioned in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Placed on paternity list
The Mets placed Martinez on the paternity list Monday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Martinez will be allowed to spend up to three days away from the Mets as he spends time with his expanding family. To fill his spot on the active roster, DJ Stewart was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Slugs 16th homer
Martinez went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 5-1 win over the White Sox. The veteran slugger took Jonathan Cannon deep in the third inning, Martinez's 16th homer of the year and fourth in his last 10 games. He's slashing .256/.275/.590 over that 10-game stretch with a 1:17 BB:K, numbers that reflect his 2024 struggles, but the 37-year-old is still within striking distance of his ninth career 20-homer campaign.... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Getting breather Thursday
Martinez isn't in the Mets' lineup for Thursday's game versus San Diego. Martinez will take a seat for Thursday's series opener after going 2-for-12 with two home runs and six RBI during New York's previous series against the Orioles. His absence will allow Jesse Winker to serve as the Mets' designated hitter while batting fifth.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Slugs 14th homer
Martinez went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Tuesday's loss to the Orioles. The veteran slugger got hold of a Burch Smith fastball in the eighth inning and drove it over the fence in right-center field, bringing the Mets to within two runs, but it was as close as they got in an eventual 9-5 defeat. Martinez has gone yard in back-to-back games, giving him 14 homers on the year, but through 17 games in August he's slashing just .211/.318/.439 as the 37-year-old continues to struggle to provide consistent offense.... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Swats 13th homer
Martinez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run during Monday's 4-3 win over the Orioles. Martinez got the Mets on the board in the first inning, plating Mark Vientos with a two-run home run off lefty Trevor Rogers. In 392 plate appearances, Martinez is slashing .256/.343/.438 with 57 RBI and 37 runs. He has only one multi-hit game in his last 12 starts.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Not in Sunday's lineup
Martinez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. Martinez has a .208/.333/.354 slash line through 14 games in August and will sit Sunday after starting the previous nine contests. Jesse Winker will serve as the designated hitter while Starling Marte (knee) is in right field in his return from the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: In Wednesday's lineup
Martinez (elbow) will start at designated hitter and bat third in Wednesday's contest against the Athletics. Martinez was lifted from Tuesday's game after being struck on the left elbow by a pitch, but he's back in there without having to miss any starts. The 36-year-old's production has fallen off since the start of July, as he's slashed just .221/.328/.354 across 33 contests.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Removed with bruised elbow
Martinez was removed from Tuesday's game against the Athletics after getting hit in the elbow by a pitch, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Martinez took a 100-mph fastball off his left elbow during the second inning and remained in the game to run the bases, eventually coming around to score on a Jose Iglesias single. However, he was pinch hit for by Mark Vientos in the third frame. Martinez was able to escape the incident with only a bruise, so he shouldn't need to miss much time -- if any at all.... See More ...
