Kyle Gibson's sweeper continued to be a terrific pitch for him last season, garnering a .257 xwOBA and 41.2 percent whiff rate. The right-hander was also durable again in 2024, making 30 starts for the third consecutive season. Everything else about Gibson was decidedly average to below average. The 37-year-old isn't even a ground ball pitcher anymore, seeing that mark drop for the third straight year down to a career-low 44.8 percent. Gibson did have some streaming appeal at times in 2024 and that will likely be the case again in 2025, regardless of where he winds up signing in free agency. However, being able to pinpoint the right times to use him could be a headache, especially when factoring in the limited upside.

    Gibson has reached 60 pitches in simulated games against college hitters and still plans to pitch in the majors this season, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. There's been little free-agent buzz around Gibson since the Cardinals elected to decline his $12 million club option for 2025 back in October. He's 37 but has made 30-plus starts each of the last three seasons while producing a 4.68 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. Gibson appears to be doing what he can to keep his arm ready, and he should eventually catch on with a club in need of a veteran innings-eater.

He will be paid a $1 million buyout instead and allowed to test free agency. Gibson failed to pitch into the fifth inning for the first time in 13 starts. Three of his four hits allowed went for extra bases, including a two-run home run by Charlie Blackmon. Gibson has allowed nine home runs in his last eight starts, posting a 4.98 ERA during that stretch.     Gibson (8-8) took the loss Friday as the Cardinals fell 5-1 to the Guardians, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out two. A Thomas Saggese throwing error allowed Gibson to barely qualify for his 13th quality start of the season, but he once again didn't get much run support. The right-hander has only one win since the All-Star break, going 1-5 over his last 11 outings despite a respectable 4.08 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 50:24 K:BB through 64 innings. Gibson will try to close out his season on a high note next weekend on the road in San Francisco.
