  • Pirates' Tim Mayza: Shifts to 60-day IL

Mayza (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Mayza landed on the injured list Saturday and won't throw for six weeks, so this transaction isn't particularly surprising news. Matt Gorski will take his place on the Pirates' 40-man roster.

  • Pirates' Tim Mayza: No-throw for six weeks

Mayza (shoulder) will be shut down from throwing for roughly six weeks, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. A strained left shoulder sent Mayza to the injured list Saturday, and he appears to be in store for a multi-month absence. He'll be re-evaluated at the end of his six-week rest period, at which point he may be cleared to begin a throwing program.

  • Pirates' Tim Mayza: Placed on IL

The Pirates placed Mayza on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a left shoulder lat muscle strain, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Mayza may have picked up the injury in his last outing Friday against the Guardians, when he gave up two hits while striking out one over 1.2 frames. He will be eligible to return from the IL in early May, though how he responds to treatment over the next few days should determine the length of his rehab program. David Bednar was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move.

  • Pirates' Tim Mayza: Reaches deal with Pittsburgh

Mayza signed one-year, $1.15 million contract with the Pirates on Monday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Mayza, who struggled through one of the worst seasons of his big-league career a season ago across stops with the Blue Jays and Yankees, will have the luxury of a fresh start following Monday's agreement. He was brilliant for the Blue Jays during the 2023 campaign, posting a sparkling 1.52 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 53 strikeouts and one save across 53.1 innings, so he'll have his sights set on returning to form in Pittsburgh.

  • Tim Mayza: Dropped by Yankees

The Yankees non-tendered Mayza on Friday. Mayza's performance improved dramatically after signing with New York in July, though he still finished the regular season with a 6.33 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 42.2 total innings. Once considered one of the most reliable high-leverage relievers in the game, the 32-year-old Mayza should still draw a fair bit of attention on the open market.

  • Yankees' Tim Mayza: Set for Yankees debut

Mayza signed a major-league contract with the Yankees on Friday and was selected to the 26-man roster. Mayza inked a minor-league deal with the Yankees on July 10 and has since been pitching for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 2.16 ERA across 8.1 innings. The left-hander shouldn't be expected to handle high-leverage work in what will be his first MLB action since being designated for assignment by the Blue Jays in late June.

  • Tim Mayza: Released by Toronto

The Blue Jays released Mayza on Friday. Mayza was DFA'd by the Jays on Saturday after posting an 8.03 ERA in 24.2 innings, and he'll now be jettisoned out of the organization and into the open market. The 32-year-old southpaw posted a 1.52 ERA in 53.1 frames just a year ago, so he could still draw some interest in free agency, but his next opportunity will likely come in the form of a minor-league contract.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: DFA'd by Jays

The Blue Jays designated Mayza for assignment Saturday. Mayza allowed five runs to score without recording an out during Friday's loss to the Yankees, inflating his ERA to 8.03 through 24.2 innings -- a far cry from his 1.52 ERA last season. The 32-year-old southpaw's drastic regression has now cost him his spot on the Jays' 40-man roster, though he could still receive some attention on the waiver wire from bullpen-needy teams hoping to unlock Mayza's previous form. Jose Cuas was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to fill the open spot in Toronto's bullpen.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Nabs eighth hold

Mayza walked one batter in a scoreless sixth inning Wednesday to record his eighth hold of the season in a win over the White Sox. The southpaw had a bumpy start to the season, but Mayza seems to have steadied his ship in May. He's been scored upon only once in his last seven appearances, posting a 1.69 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 5.1 innings during that stretch with three holds. The 32-year-old remains the top option in the Toronto bullpen from the left side.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Stuck with loss Wednesday

Mayza (0-1) took the loss Wednesday against the Mariners, giving up four runs (three earned) on one hit and two walks in one-third of an inning. The southpaw entered a 1-1 tie in the top of the 10th inning and promptly served up a two-run homer to Cal Raleigh, plating the designated runner, before walking two more batters and watching them come around to score after he left the mound. Mayza's control has deserted him to begin the season -- he threw only seven of 17 pitches for strikes Wednesday, and through 4.1 innings he has a 4:6 K:BB to go along with a 12.46 ERA. The 32-year-old is being counted on as Toronto's top lefty in the bullpen, but he could lose high-leverage opportunities to Genesis Cabrera if he doesn't turn things around.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Yet to allow run this spring

Mayza gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning of relief during Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays. Entering the game in the fourth inning, Mayza fanned Jose Caballero en route to another clean frame. The veteran southpaw has a 0.00 ERA through four spring innings with a 5:1 K:BB, and after recording a career-high 22 holds in 2023, he's on track to be the top left-handed set-up man for closer Jordan Romano in the Toronto bullpen.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Settles with Toronto

The Blue Jays and Mayza avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.59 million contract Thursday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Mayza was arbitration-eligible for the second time. The southpaw reliever has been super reliable for Toronto over the last three seasons, posting a 2.67 ERA and 154:39 K:BB over 155 innings out of its bullpen.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Continues to see situational role

Mayza gave up a hit but didn't allow a run in two-thirds of an inning during Sunday's loss to the Rangers. While MLB's rule changes the last few years have effectively eliminated the LOOGY role, apparently nobody told the Blue Jays. Mayza has worked less than one inning in nine of his last 11 appearances, recording four holds over that stretch with a 2.57 ERA and 6:2 K:BB through seven innings. His usage puts a firm limit on his fantasy value, even in deeper formats that score holds, but the 31-year-old remains a key part of the Toronto bullpen.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Dominant in first hold

Mayza struck out all four batters he faced to record his first hold of the season in Tuesday's win over the Royals. The southpaw cut through the bottom of Kansas City's order after entering the game with one out and one on in the seventh inning, fanning Vinnie Pasquantino, Jackie Bradley, Nate Eaton and Nicky Lopez on only 19 pitches (13 strikes). Mayza has collected at least 16 holds in three straight seasons, and he figures to be comfortably in double digits again in 2023 as the top lefty in the Toronto bullpen.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Looks good this spring

Mayza posted a 1.42 ERA and 7:0 K:BB through 6.1 Grapefruit League innings this spring. The 31-year-old lefty appeared in only one Grapefruit League game after March 18 as the Blue Jays let their top set-up men get in most of their work on back fields late in camp. Mayza has racked up 52 holds over the last three seasons and figured to be Toronto's top relief option from the port side again in 2023.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Reaches terms with Toronto

Mayza agreed to a one-year, $2.1 million contract with the Blue Jays on Friday to avoid arbitration, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Mayza was once again a solid bullpen piece for Toronto in 2022 and recorded two saves and 16 holds with a 3.14 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 44:12 K:BB across 48.2 innings. The veteran lefty should fill a similar role out of the bullpen in 2023.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Notches rain-aided save

Mayza worked a perfect seventh inning to record his second save of the season in Monday's 5-1 win over the Orioles. The game was called on account of rain after the top of the eighth inning, leaving Mayza with the save despite him coming in well before the ninth. The southpaw has had a couple stumbles over the final month of the regular season, but he still sports a 4.09 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB through 11 innings since the beginning of September with three wins and five holds in 16 appearances, in addition to both of his saves.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Beginning rehab assignment

Mayza (shoulder) will report to Triple-A Buffalo to start a rehab assignment Saturday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Mayza has been sidelined since suffering a dislocated right shoulder Aug. 6, and he'll return to game action exactly two weeks later. The left-hander has a 2.88 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 27:5 K:BB across 34.1 innings this year and should be able to rejoin the Blue Jays sometime next week.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Throws off mound

Mayza (shoulder) threw off a mound Friday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. Mayza landed on the 15-day IL with a dislocated shoulder Sunday, but it's encouraging that he's been cleared to resume mound work less than a week later. The Blue Jays hope that the southpaw will be able to return around the end of August.

  • Blue Jays' Tim Mayza: Avoids season-ending injury

Mayza (shoulder) is expected to return this season, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports. Mayza suffered a dislocated right shoulder in Saturday's game, but it appears as if the injury will not sideline him for the remainder of the season. The Blue Jays are hopeful that the left-hander will be able to return as soon as the end of August.
