Summary
Tez Johnson’s best asset is his speed and explosive short-area burst, both of which provided chances for him to turn short plays into long gains as well as win on longer throws (even though he didn’t see as many of those). Johnson lined up everywhere and had a good route tree. Where Johnson noticeably lacks is in size – he was 5-foot-9 7/8 and 154 pounds with nine-inch hands at the NFL combine. With no room to grow and no functional strength to speak of, Johnson’s limitations could force him into a modest role on limited snaps.
About
- Combine: Ran mediocre 40-yard dash time (4.51 seconds) but clocked the fastest MPH of any wide receiver during on-field drills
- 2023: Set single-season school record with 86 receptions; ranked third in school history in receiving yards (1,182) and tied for fourth in receiving touchdowns (10)"
Strengths
- Speed: Johnson frequently won with very good explosion off the snap, good change-of-direction and solid deep speed. He also varied his speed in his routes. Teams will be attracted to this primary trait for both offense and kick-returns.
- Route running: Johnson lined up everywhere and mastered in and out routes, hitches, crossers and of course go routes but definitely contributed on screens, whip and post routes. There’s potential for him to run a well-refined route tree.
Weaknesses
- Hands: Johnson had a 5.5% career drop rate, and that didn’t include the litany of bobbles and trapped footballs on his chest that are on his tape. He had 10 fumbles over five seasons (six at Oregon, none lost). His hands measured in at nine inches at the NFL combine.
- Size and physicality: He was ragdolled by college defenders due to his wispy, light frame. Johnson reacted to oncoming tacklers by diving before contact (like Tyler Lockett). He was also a liability as a blocker. The track record of sub-170-pound receivers in the NFL is not good; Johnson weighed 154 at the NFL combine.
Combine Data
- 40-yard dash: 4.51 seconds
- Vertical jump: 37 inches
- 20-yard shuttle run: 4.15 seconds
- Broad jump: 10 feet, 11 inches
- 3-cone drill: 6.65 seconds
