NCAA bracket 2025 live updates: Selection Sunday coverage, March Madness bracket, NCAA Tournament basketball
The 2025 NCAA Tournament bracket is nearing release as March Madness gets locked into place
The 2025 NCAA Tournament field is officially set after the selection committee on Sunday unveiled its 68-team bracket live on CBS, led by No. 1 seeds Auburn, Duke, Houston and Florida.
The Auburn Tigers lead the way in the South Region as the No. 1 overall seed, with the Houston Cougars drawing the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region. The two were joined by No. 1 seed Duke in the East Region and No. 1 seed Florida in the West Region.
Two of the four No. 1 seeds hailed from the SEC in a banner year for the conference after 14 teams from the league earned bids into this year's field — setting a new NCAA Tournament record. It was six more than the league with the second-most bids.

West Virginia's shocking omission
NCAA Tournament selection committee chair Bubba Cunningham said on CBS after the bracket's reveal that West Virginia — the first team out of this year's field — was ultimately omitted because of the injury to Mountaineers star Tucker DeVries. DeVries was a key transfer from Drake along with his dad, WVU coach Darian DeVries, but the admission comes as a shock when you dig into the numbers.
Of West Virginia's six Quad 1 wins, in fact, four came without DeVries, who last played Dec. 6.
That's three more Quad 1 wins than North Carolina — which snuck in as one of the last teams to make the field — had all season.
SEC banner season continues
Much will be made about the SEC's remarkable season, and much should be made about it. The league set a record with 14 teams earning bids into the NCAA Tournament. Of those, two are No. 1 seeds (Auburn, Florida), two are No. 2 seeds (Alabama, Tennessee), one is a No. 3 seed (Kentucky) and one a No. 4 seed (Texas A&M). A banner season ending with an NCAA Tournament banner very much seems in the cards.
New metric helped UNC sneak in field
North Carolina landed in the NCAA Tournament field as the last team in the field after accumulating a 1-12 overall record in Quad 1 opportunities. The inclusion of the Tar Heels was due at least in part to a new metric being used by the committee called "WAB" — or Wins Above Bubble — which aims to quantify how many more or fewer wins a team against its schedule versus what a bubble team would expect to have against the same schedule. UNC ranked first in WAB among the eight teams in the Last Four In and First Four Out.
It also ranked first among those teams in NET ranking and KenPom ranking.
North Carolina earns last spot in NCAA Tournament field
According to the NCAA Tournament selection committee's seeding list, and as stated on CBS after the bracket reveal by the committee's vice chair, Keith Gill, North Carolina earned the last spot in the 68-team field.
UNC can thank Memphis for that bid, too.
Memphis' win over UAB in the AAC Tournament finale on Sunday guaranteed the AAC would be a one-bid league and notably nixed UAB's candidacy as a bid-stealer. Had UAB won, UNC would have missed the tourney.
Wild turn of events that shows just how close the Tar Heels were to missing March Madness altogether.

Kansas earns lowest seed of Self era
Since taking over the Kansas basketball program in 2003, Bill Self has never missed the NCAA Tournament and never had a seed worse than a No. 4 seed.
That changed today.
Kansas, the preseason No. 1 team in the AP poll, will enter this year's March Madness as a No. 7 seed. It will play out of the West Region and faces No. 10 seed Arkansas in Round 1.
KU finished the season with a 21-12 overall record.
